i am the proud owner of a late model john deere A (unofficially until it is delivered)

its already restored, it just needs to be dusted off. needs a battery, coil hooked up, new rear tube and put the front wheel on.

also needs a new seat and back cushion.

was running 4 years ago, oil filter fell out, they shut it off while it was running still and parked it almost ever since. they said it runs (will run) but with almost no oil pressure. they did manage to install a new oil pump too but did not correct the problem. does not blow any blue smoke.

may need more tending but at least i don't have to deal with paint or fixing rust and dents.

you probably won't believe what i paid for it either

After sending you an email about your questions, I see you did buy it. Sounds like the main bearings will need to be replaced since it is not holding good oil pressure. Or, the oil pump may need to be adjusted up. I would try adjusting the oil pump first and see if that helps hold a better pressure.

Now, go buy yourself a good service manual. It will tell you how to work on everything on the tractor.

If it has been several years before it has been turned over, you might want to pour a little oil in the cylinders (through the spark plug holes) and let it soak a couple of days. Be ready to buy more plugs as these will probably foul rather quickly. Some people just crank it and hope for the best. This will sometimes lead to breaking a compression ring if the cylinder walls are very dry.

Alabamafrog will be a good person to ask about motor internal questions. It has been a couple of years since I have been into the heart of those ole A's and I have forgotten a lot of the details.

We’ve been talking back and forth through email, I recommended spraying penetrating oil in both plug holes then rocking the flywheel by hand. And if that didn’t work I recommended soaking the cylinders everyday for a few weeks and putting it in gear and jacking one wheel up and rocking it by hand.
The oil pressure adjustment is a big flat head screw behind a plug just above where you check the engine oil infront of the belt pulley/clutch.

The engine crankcase, remove that panel and you can reach in and grab the crankshaft and easily remove the rod caps and you can reach down deep and mess with the oil pressure regulator/ filter head.

wanted to just repeat what else i've read about breaking things loose. remove the valve cover and loosen up the push rods and remove them from under the rockers because you may bend them if you don't when you try to break the engine loose.

now thats something i don't remember hearing from anyone. could i just take the cover off and spray it all with penetrating oil? can that gasket be reused temporarily or not?

with the panel removed, can i replace the rod bearings or not depending if they need replacement after i adjust the oil pump?

is there a procedure for adjusting the oil pump?

spraying them want help. also when you start back up with it and find that it does have oil holes for two of the valves that will be right as it is. jd didn't put oil on the valves except for the two. the others got fumes and splashed on is all. you need a shop manual bad. don't know why you want to adjust the oil pressure. its simple to do, just need to read the owners manual. yes you can take the rod caps off and it might be the best thng to do while your trying to free it up. be sure and mark the caps and the rods with a punch, there may be some there already, but i prefer to put my own on so there is never any questions about how it goes back togeher. if you can't get it free remove the head and you can press them out then. while the head is off have the valves done and trhe surfaces where manifolds mate to the heaed surfaced to where they are flat. you can use the gasket temporarily. might coat it woith black rtv or the yellow weather streipping stuff by 3m. don't gfet it on you. it want come off.

it has so little oil pressure that it doesn't read on the guage. weather or not the guage is broken, we'll test that but if the oil pressure really is that bad i need a solution to bring it up a little and the adjustment on the oil pump is probably where to start since that was replaced already.
