In my last post I had the tractor running and drove it out of the garage for the first time.
This test run showed up some problems that needed to be addressed.

#1 ..
The transmission was making a nasty noise when I let the clutch out to drive it.
It did this in all of the gears but not when it was in neutral.
Turns out the rear bearing was shot. I replaced the rear bearing so that should take care of that problem.
The other bearings seam to be OK.

#2 ..
When I last had this engine running ( a long time ago ), I seam to remember that it ran OK and didn't smoke.
It did however, leak oil real bad and the engine was caked with it.

In talking with my son, we decided that it probably sat in a hot warehouse a lot and the seals got cooked.
Part of that conclusion was because the other rubber parts on the cart were all dry rotted and cracked.

I pulled the heads off and inspected the cylinders.
They both looked really good and I could not feel any ring groove edge at the top of the cylinders.

So, with the cost of overhauling an Onan engine being as hi as it is, I decided to take a chance that the rings were still good.
I put new gaskets and seals in and put it back together.

As before, the engine ran good and did not smoke and now it doesn't leak oil.
However, when I checked the vent tube, it was puffing air out like a compressor.
When I revved the engine up, it spit oil out the vent tube.

I pulled the engine back down and pulled the pistons out.
The top ring on both pistons was broken in half so I'm going to have to spend some money and rebuild after all.

#3 ..
The last time I was held up on this project was because I was looking for a governor for the engine.
The governor on the Onan engine is on the end of the camshaft.
A member here was kind enough to fix me up with another cam with the governor on it.

It turned out that his cam would not work in my engine.
I wasn't able to come up with the correct cam so I went ahead and used my old cam and hooked the throttle cable directly to the carburetor.

My son tells me that it really would work better with a governor and I have to agree with him.
In just the short time it took to drive the tractor out of the garage, around the yard a little and back into the garage, I was fiddling with the throttle lever a lot.

So .. I'm back to trying to find a cam with a governor on it.
I also need a different carb as this one won't work easily with the governor setup on the engine.
This carb is off a B&S V-Twin and has the levers on the wrong side.

The last time I was looking for parts, I spent the time fixing my truck.
This time I'm working back on a Bolens Ridemaster for my Sweetie.

...... GOOD NEWS ......
Just won a camshaft and carburetor off ebay this morning so the tractor will be back up and running shortly after the parts arrive.

Hopefully this will be the right cam this time. It looks like it is from the photos on ebay but I won't know for sure until it gets here.

This is just another one of those "learn as you go" things.

The rings and rod bearings came today.
Both cylinders are all honed and the new rings and bearings are installed.

I'm not going to take the rest of the engine apart until the cam gets here and I can make sure it is the right one that I need.
If so, then the flywheel, front cover, lifter cover plates ,fuel pump and points box all come off ( again ).
Then I can remove the valves and lifters, put in the new cam an start putting it all back together again ( again ).
