Does it change the gears as it should?

Take this as a guess but it could be as simple as the shifter end being very worn and/or the slots it the rails it moves to change gears the gears. I do not know your tractor but if it was mine and the plate the shifter mechanism was on top of the transmission I'd have to pull it off and take look. You might be wise to search the net for some diagrams of the shifter and transmission.

Thankyou it has a cab so a bit awkward but i am sure i can find a work arround
