Right now it has a cable going from the side of the starter to the positive on the far side battery. The negative from that battery comes over to the near side battery positive and the negative from the near battery goes to the solenoid on the starter.
I have had the generator, regulator and starter all replaced in the last 10 years. Maybe one of the guys doing the work switched the wiring?
