This is one our local landmarks. It's a sacred site to the Lakota indians.

Very stately and pretty. How far is it from any other high ground?

It's about 5 or 6 miles from the Black Hills. This is pretty much a random mountain in the prairie. It's a volcano that never blew it's top, it just grew with each eruption.

It's nowhere near Wounded Knee. About 150 miles away. Custer is about 60-70 miles away.

If you think Globally 150 miles is "semi-near".
As if I drove 1000 miles to see it, another 150 wouldn't be that far. ;)

I guess it would be near if you think globally, but that's like going partway around the world in SD.

John i really like the fotos of Your part of the country. We live in the same great plains, i'm just a bit further south. No part of the plains are the same as the others. Its kind of an irony; the middle foto with the shallow cloud bank near the peak kind of resembles a minor eruption  I really like the fotos of Your patrt of the country
