I know what it sounds like in a V8 engine but how would you recognize it it a loud, slow reving two cylinder?

Have you checked your fuel? Detonation is caused by too low octane. Just a thought.

I'm just trying to find out how to identify detonation so I know. It's easy to hear in a passenger vehicle (sounds like valve clatter) but I was wondering if its hard to hear on a two cylinder deere or if it's pretty obvious when it happens.

Unless you have oversized pistons, I highly doubt you will have a diesel ping. Last summer when my 60 was acting up I tried to retard the spark ever so slightly. Moving that distributor just ever so slightly did not help. My 60 on full compression still has a full inch that the piston never travels from the top.

Have you a mechanics stethoscope? Try it. You will find your noise really quickly. I had a broken valve lifter on my 60.
