there were other draft sensing hitches along the way as well.. the 3pt just ended up becoming a good standard to go by.

I agree, Harry Ferguson did come up with the 3pt. linkage.around the early 40's.
The Detroit diesels were fitted to a couple of a hundred Farmall M's, as a trial, then they put their own 4 cylinder petrol start diesels in the M's & W6/s, that was around the early 40's too.
