I am stuck, and hoping someone can help.

My Ford 640 is not starting. I have changed solenoid, starter, checked gaps, new plugs, etc. I get a spark and gas.

Main issue seems to be backfiring through carb. A local mechanic helped me remove the head, and we found there were two valves with issues so he replaced them for me. I have since rebuilt, and it is"trying" to start, but backfires.

I have played with the timing by loosening and rotating the distributor, but still happens.

Any help and suggestions would be REALLY welcome!

Thanks
Tim

It's obvious that the timing is out, re time it statically, if you have a manual, if not go to top dead centre no.1 piston & set your points accordingly.

You have a timing hole on the flywheel. There is a plate with a indentation on the plate that locks in on the hole in the bell housing. You need the book that tells you how to set it up. Otherwise to me it sounds like you have a mixed up firing order.

Thanks guys, I will look into both. I do have the book, and have read up on how to reset the timing.

Will let you know.
