Hello all, my name is Dave and I'm a first time poster on this forum.

I have what can only be described as my own personal hell. I am not a mechanic by any stretch, but I don't mind getting dirty, I learn fast and I'm not afraid to fail which is all I've been doing lately.

I will attempt to make this very long story short, but I can't make any promises. I bought an old IH 240U from an old man about 20 miles from my farm. First year farm owner, need to get the fields cut before the spring grass has to contend with the weeds. When I was out looking at the tractor, it started, it ran, and it drove. The hydraulic arms moved up and down, though they whined a bit. The wiring to the alternator and starter, as well as the battery cable was all rigged up and spliced and corroded. I started to mess with those and for a while lost the ability to even start the tractor. I replaced the battery cable, and stripped the wires down to get rid of the corrosion. No more issues starting!

The nightmare is the hydraulics. Once it was brought home, the hydraulics stopped working. At first they would whine a bit like they did when I was looking at it, now they barely whine at all and they do not move more than an inch up or down. I searched high and low for the filter, thinking it was probably plugged. Found what I believe to be the filter and cleared it out but still nothing. At this point I began to look around and noticed that most of the hydraulic fluid I added to the reservoir had leaked out onto the ground beneath the tractor. It was cloudy and yellow, which I'm told indicates water in the system. I've tried just about everything that I know how and still have not gotten them to work enough to actually accomplish anything. My thoughts are, and this is what I dread more than most things...that I will need to dismantle the entire back end of this tractor. I will have to take the hitch off, figure out how to take apart the reservoir, flush it, clean it out, replace whatever seals may be in there as well as supply lines and on and on and on. It's not the labor portion that is bothering me, it's not knowing my elbow from a hole in the ground when it comes to putting it back together properly. I can search for the parts I will need just fine, but does anyone have any tips, or know exactly what parts I am going to need to overhaul this system? I have a manual, but that doesn't really tell me much. I'm looking more for real world experience.

I would greatly appreciate any replies that will help me get this job done.

Welcome to ATF Dave! Because you say you are not a mechanic I strongly suggest you get an owners/service manual for your tractor. The nasty color of the hydraulic oil indicates moisture is present. The manual will tell you where a filter is located. Personally I would have to find out where the leak is and fix that first. If the reservoir cannot hold fluid the hydraulics will not work. The manual will also show you if your tractor lift has adjusting points that possibly need to be tweaked for the unit to work properly. Your manual will recommend hytran, I believe any good universal hydraulic oil that meets the specifications will work. Read the label on the container as it will list the oil specifications. Best of luck and keep us posted.
