Hi everyone, trying to remove the starter from my early '44 VAC, and I can pull it far enough that the gear comes out... but the spring behind it is blocked by the flywheel.

I've tried cocking it, twisting it, angling it every possible way I can, even read about a cutout around the 2 o'clock position but there's no room. Any advice/expertise here?

Or, can the tractor be turned by hand? Mine didn’t come with a hand-crank but I’m sure I could find one just to try and get the thing started. ?

I would look at getting a crank handle, or get someone to tow you for a start.

Hello and Welcome. I wish I could help. I know I rebuilt a starter on a '54VAI but that was 30 0r 31 years ago.
I remember having trouble getting it out, and back in, and getting the bendix on, but can't remember any particulars.
I've slept too many times since then, and sold the tractor 22 years ago. Even looking at your photos doesn't trigger anything.
Hopefully someone who's done it more recent will chime in and give you some pointers.
