A lot of field corn is tassling and most of it is only 3-4 feet tall. Stalks won't be very tall at harvest this fall.

I wonder if it has to do with being planted early?
I know if you plant it late it will get very tall, I do this intentionally for my cornshocks for fall decorations.

Early planted tobacco is usually shorter with fewer leaves, but a heavy crop if it matures properly. Could being warm in April and cool in May have played a part in it?

I haven't noticed that around here, but I've seen some that was planted later lookin' awful short and spindly.
A few fields, with 3 to 4 foot tall corn, I've seen, are gonna die soon without water, and no rain forecast at the moment for the next two weeks.

The field corn is pineappleing bad here. sometimes you see one really bad field on 1 side of the road and the field on the other side is suffering but not nearly as bad.
