Here is my 93 year old cousin's recipe. Miss Joanne made it a few days ago and it is pretty tasty.


Turnip Casserole
2 pounds turnips, peeled and chopped
1/4 cup margarine divided
1 small onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup milk
11/2 cup grated white cheddar cheese (sharp cheddar cheese is good too) divided
1/2 teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon pepper
1/3 Italian-seasoned bread crumbs

Cooking Instructions
Cook turnips in water until tender, drain well
Transfer into a large bowl and mash well
Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet
Over medium heat add onion and saute for 3 minutes or till tender
To the turnips add the onion, 1 cup cheese, salt & pepper and remaining 3 tablespoons margarine and stir to combine
Spoon into a lightly greased 11x7 inch baking dish
Sprinkle evenly with bread crumbs and remaining ½ cup cheese
Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until lightly browned
