So I'm making a game plan for how to refurbish my 49 vac and as I started to look for a long s shaped air intake hose, I realized that these babies don't require s shaped intake hoses... someone has modified my air cleaner!

Before I move it back to the stock position, does anyone have an insight of why this might be beneficial? I plan to mount the full length air cleaner cap, so I figure if it's in the original position, the support bracket up top (not pictured) will line up. But I'm still puzzled. Why would a fella pull this further away from the carb?

Perhaps a previous owner was making use of what he had. Very common practice for many farmerers, myself included.

The only thing I can think of for why move the air cleaner out like that would be try to pull cooler air into the engine for a little more power. Since cooler air is denser, it makes a bit more power. And since it was burning gasoline instead of tractor fuel or Kerosene, there would've been no need to heat the intake air.
